Profile of the Talk
Following on from our first talk on film, Jad will talk about how his novel included film as part of the narrative. Imagine the columns of Jupiter’s temple in Baalbek, kept together for centuries by two blocks of stone: the upper a reminder of time, the lower a clear witness of the present. Now each column is a separate unity, but each one still forms an essential part of the temple.

is a novel made up of separate columns (chapters?) but telling one story: that of the 1983 Cannes Film Festival, the new Palais de Festival, Lebanon’s civil war and failed peace arrangement with Israel.
The novel is also based on another pillar: a love story in a style of cinematographic prose that preserves the ‘mood’ of the images throughout the book.

Here are the films that are tackled in the novel:
1) The King of Comedy (Martin Scorsezi)
Robert de Niro & Jerry Louis (1983)
Opening the Cannes film festival of 1983
2) The Road (Yelmaz Guney)
Cannes Film Festival 1982, won the Golden Palm
3) The Ballad of Narayama (Shohy Imamora )
Won the Golden Palm 1983
4) Nostalgia (Andrei Tarkovsky)
Awarded the special trophy of the Festival 1983
5) Erindira (Roy Guerra)
Based on a novella by Gabriel Garcia Marquez (1984)
