The Talk
The
first half of the presentation provides a thorough overview of the principles
of intellectual property law, from a domestic and international perspective,
with particular focus on copyright issues.
No prior knowledge of the legal principles in this area is required. The second
half of the presentation zooms in on artificial intelligence and tackles the
two questions that are most relevant from an intellectual viewpoint, namely:
(1) whether works credited by artificial intelligence merit protection under
intellectual property rights, and
(2) whether artificial intelligence can use works protected by intellectual
property laws without the consent of their owners.
The presentation is then followed by a Q&A session.
Walid Nasser has
practiced corporate and intellectual property law for over 40 years at a number
of premier law firms and corporate legal departments in the US, Italy, Turkey,
UAE and Lebanon, among others.
Before his return to Lebanon in 1997, he served for 12 years as the VP of the
Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA). During the first 7 years of his
tenure with the MPAA he was responsible for organizing and supervising the
fight against film piracy in the Middle East and a part of Europe. In the last
5 years of his tenure with the MPAA he served as the VP and Deputy General
Counsel for that company.
Walid was also a member of the committee that drafted the copyright law of
Lebanon enacted in 1999 and the Lebanese patent law enacted in 2000.
Walid holds a License en droit degree from St. Joseph University,
Lebanon, a Diplôme d'études approfondies from Université Jean
Moulin (Lyon III), France, and a Master of Laws degree from
Harvard Law School, US.
